The town's motto promises that its patron saint is kind to strangers, which is not a bad rule for anyone about to meet someone new. Linlithgow is an ancient royal burgh in West Lothian, set beside its loch on the old route between Edinburgh and Falkirk, and in the Middle Ages it grew up around the royal palace.

Leather making came next, then the Union Canal in the 1820s and the railway in 1842, which helped it grow fast in the Victorian era. About 12,500 people live there now, and the centre makes its living from hospitality, heritage and tourism, so it's used to faces that don't belong to the town. It was West Lothian's county town once, though the council has since moved to Livingston.
