Bo'ness has swapped coal for leisure

Borrowstounness, to give it the full name, was a seaport on the south bank of the Forth, with coal mining, salt-making and pottery all working behind its harbour. The mine closed in 1982 and the waterfront is now mostly given over to leisure, though an ironworks and a sawmill still work beside the water. Historically it belonged to West Lothian; today it sits in the Falkirk council area, with around 15,000 people.

The old centre is a conservation area with several listed buildings, which makes for an easy wander before anything gets serious. On a wet day the Museum of Scottish Railways and the town's regional motor museum give you somewhere public and dry to start, with plenty to point at if the conversation stalls.
