Festival season and other good excuses

The city's calendar does half the work of a first date for you.

Late July to early September: The Fringe, the International Festival, the Military Tattoo and the art, book and film festivals all run in these weeks. A show makes a ready-made first meeting with a set end time, and the film festival is the oldest continually running one in the world.
30 April: The Beltane Fire Festival on Calton Hill: a procession, then fire-lit scenes inspired by old pagan spring fertility rites. Fitting, really.
Early October: The Dussehra Hindu festival, also held on Calton Hill.
The rest of the year: Several theatres and production companies keep going outside festival season, so there's still a show to suggest on a wet Tuesday in February.

Head out from the centre and Juniper Green comes first, under five miles away; Dalkeith is about six, Prestonpans about eight and Tranent a little over nine. On the far side of the Forth, Inverkeithing, Lochgelly and Dunfermline in Fife are all within about 13.
