Hedon has already had its boom. In the 12th and 13th centuries this little Holderness town was at its richest, and at one point it ranked as England's eleventh largest port.
It was probably a Norman creation: the town isn't in the Domesday Book, which is why it's thought to have been built from scratch as a port. The name comes from the Old English for 'heather hill'. Decline set in when Hull's port grew and ships got too big for the small river up to Hedon, but the town held on to its charters, including one that let it elect a mayor and another, in 1415, that gave it a mace.
The 2021 census counted 6,881 people in the parish, a couple of hundred fewer than in 2011. The town sits at the crossroads of the B1240 and B1362, just north of the A1033, and its Grade I listed parish church goes by the grand title of the King of Holderness.
