Ellon began as a crossing. The town grew up around a ford on the River Ythan, and its name is believed to come from the Gaelic for "island". The river is still the headline act: it runs out to one of the few undeveloped estuaries on Scotland's east coast, and the walkways of the Riverside Park are where herons, salmon, trout and otters may turn up.

The Auld Brig, a Category A listed bridge from 1793 that no longer carries vehicles, is an easy landmark to name, and Ellon Castle Gardens, restored by volunteers, hold yew trees thought to be at least 500 years old beside the ruins of the old castle. Sporty? The Meadows on the edge of town has football and rugby pitches, an astroturf pitch for hockey, a gym and a sports hall, and is home to Ellon United and the town's rugby and hockey clubs.

A town that began as a river crossing knows a thing or two about meeting in the middle. The A90 bypasses Ellon, with Aberdeen to the south and Peterhead and Fraserburgh to the north, and the A920 heads west to Oldmeldrum and Huntly. Regular buses run to Aberdeen, Inverurie, Peterhead and Fraserburgh. Inverurie is about 13 miles away, Aberdeen about 15 and Turriff just under 19, so finding a halfway point is rarely a problem.
