Much of Aberdeen's Victorian centre is built from locally quarried grey granite, so full of mica it can sparkle like silver, which is how the place got its name as the Granite City. Aberdeen has its own council these days, separate from Aberdeenshire, but the shire is right on the doorstep. Three of its towns sit within 16 miles: Inverurie at about 14, Ellon at 15 and Banchory at 16. Insch is under 24 miles off, Turriff about 30 and Huntly a little over 33, while Montrose and Brechin, over the line in Angus, are both within 36.
