Dumfries, the largest town and the council's base, and Stranraer, the second town, are about 76 miles apart, with Stranraer out west on the North Channel coast. The region stitches together three old counties: Dumfriesshire, plus Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire, the pair that made up Galloway.

Between the towns lie the uplands, Galloway Forest Park, the Nith estuary and a shoreline of small villages such as Kippford, Rockcliffe and Auchencairn. First dates worth the trip, from Dumfries to Wigtown

Dumfries, the largest town, is the obvious place for a first drink, and Annan and Newton Stewart have pages of their own. You won't need a car for every date, either. Stranraer, Kirkconnel, Sanquhar, Dumfries, Annan and Gretna Green are all stations on the Glasgow South Western Line, and Lockerbie is on the West Coast Main Line. Buses from Stagecoach, Houston's, McCall's and the council's own DGC Buses fill in the gaps, and by road the A701 leaves the M74 at Beattock and heads through Moffat towards Edinburgh.
