Bridgwater Hookups: Bridgwater Women Want to Meet

Carnival-town hookups on the Parrett, with Taunton and Weston close by.

Bridgwater's big night, and every other night

Bridgwater keeps its big night for November, when it hosts the largest of all the Somerset carnivals. It has a history of not sitting quietly: the town had a politically radical streak, the Battle of Sedgemoor was fought close by in 1685, and by 1500 it was the largest port in Somerset.

Today it's a working town of nearly 48,000 across its built-up area, on both banks of the River Parrett at the edge of the Somerset Levels, with the Quantock hills to the west and the Mendips to the north. In its time it made bricks, tiles, ships and railway parts, and it's still picking up new trades, among them training people for the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant.

For a hookup, that adds up to a good-sized town that's still spreading, with new housing out towards Wembdon, Durleigh and North Petherton, the M5 close at hand, and Taunton and Weston-super-Mare both within 16 miles when you'd rather meet away from home.

Carnival night, Castle Street and other places to meet

Carnival night
The November carnival is the town's big night out. In a crowd that size it's easy to meet in public and slip away together later, as long as you've agreed a meeting point first.
Castle Street and the Arts Centre
A Georgian street built in the 1720s over the site of the old castle. The Bridgwater Arts Centre has filled two of its houses since 1946, so a show there makes an easy second date.
West Quay and the river
The Parrett runs through the middle of town, and the Lions building on West Quay, from around 1730, gives a riverside walk a touch of grandeur.
The Willow Man
Driving in on the M5, look out for a 12-metre striding figure woven from willow, visible from the motorway. When you see him, you're nearly there.

Bridgwater questions, carnival included

Is carnival night a good time to meet someone in Bridgwater?

It's the town's big night, and the November carnival is the largest in Somerset. Agree a meeting point beforehand, stay where there are people around, and keep your phone charged.

Can I meet someone from Bristol or Cardiff?

Yes. Both are inside the 40-mile circle our Bridgwater figures cover, along with Bath, Weston-super-Mare and Chepstow. For a first meeting, pick somewhere between the two of you so neither has the whole drive.

What is there to do on a date in Bridgwater?

A show at the Arts Centre on Castle Street, a walk along West Quay by the Parrett or, in November, the carnival. For a day out, the Quantock hills rise to the west, and the river meets the sea at the Bridgwater Bay nature reserve.
