Hookups in England's smallest city, nearly

Wells gets called England's smallest city, and it very nearly is. Only the City of London is smaller, in area and in people, and that's one corner of something far bigger, whereas Wells stands on its own at the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. It owes its city status to the cathedral, and its name to three holy wells in the grounds of the Bishop's Palace and the cathedral, which still supply water to the marketplace.

About 12,100 people live in the built-up area, which spills over into the neighbouring parish of St Cuthbert Out. A city in name and a market town in size, then, and that cuts both ways for a hookup: fewer people on your doorstep, but Bath, Bristol and Taunton are each less than 25 miles off when you want a wider choice.

A small city makes the logistics simple, as long as you think them through before the night itself.

1. Pick somewhere central. The marketplace and the streets around the cathedral are landmarks anyone can find, whether they live in Wells or are driving in for the evening.
2. Or meet a few miles out. Shepton Mallet is under five miles away and Glastonbury just over five, so either gives you a quick change of scene, and Midsomer Norton is about nine.
