Reading and the crowded east

Reading is the natural middle ground. Besides being the county town, it has the University of Reading, with its Henley Business School, and a Reading campus of the University of West London. East of it the population really bunches up: Woodley, Earley, Wokingham and Bracknell, then Maidenhead, Slough and Windsor on the Thames. For a daytime first meeting with room to talk, Windsor Great Park and the pines of Swinley Forest beat a crowded bar.

Newbury and the rural west

West Berkshire is much quieter, with only a few towns of any size: Newbury, Thatcham and Hungerford. That makes a town centre the sensible place for a first drink, somewhere with people about, and it's worth telling a friend where you'll be.
