From Henley Bridge to the Market Place
Henley-on-Thames announces itself from the river. Henley Bridge has carried five arches across the Thames since 1786 and is Grade I listed, Marsh Lock lies a mile upstream, and in the Market Place stands the Town Hall, finished in 1900. Chantry House, the town's other Grade I building, has more storeys on one side than the other.
The town has had a turn on screen too: a British sitcom was set here, and an American drama placed a rowing race on its stretch of the Thames. Sport has deep roots, with the cricket club on the same ground since 1886 and Henley Town the oldest football club recognised by the Oxfordshire FA. Henley sits near the point where Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire meet, which is why so many of its closest neighbours are in somebody else's county. Woodley is just under six miles away, Marlow six and Maidenhead under eight. The station is the end of the branch line from Twyford, and the fast London trains leave from Reading, six miles off. A bus links Henley with Marlow and High Wycombe and carries on to Reading, so a match can reach you without a car. Check the last way home before you fix a time.
