Wiltshire hookups around the edge of the Plain
Salisbury Plain fills the middle of Wiltshire, the biggest stretch of the chalk that lies under two thirds of the county, shared between farmland and Army training ranges. Just to its north, the Tan Hill and Milk Hill ridge in the Vale of Pewsey reaches 295 metres, the highest ground in the county. The county's 768,000 or so people share 1,346 square miles, and the centre and south-west are thinly settled. Even the rivers keep it simple: both of the main ones are called the Avon.
So the towns sit round the rim. Swindon, the largest, is in the north-east; the city of Salisbury is in the south-east; Trowbridge and Chippenham are in the west, and the north-west corner belongs to the limestone Cotswolds. Closer in, Devizes and Amesbury are both under eight miles from the county's midpoint, useful middle ground when one of you lives north of the Plain and the other south.
Two Wiltshires to choose from, north and south
Up the M4
The north is the richer half, helped by the M4 corridor, which keeps drawing business in. Swindon is home to big employers such as Intel, Nationwide and WHSmith, and Dyson is based nearby in Malmesbury. Swindon Town play at the County Ground near the town centre and have been in the Football League since 1920, so a match day is a ready-made excuse to be in town. For a walk instead, the Marlborough Downs and Savernake Forest are in the same north-eastern corner.
Down by the Plain
The south is quieter and more thinly settled. Salisbury, the only city in Wiltshire, anchors the south-east, which also takes in a corner of the New Forest; Cranborne Chase reaches into the far south, and the Vale of Wardour lies below the West Wiltshire Downs. With fewer people around, the simplest plan down here is a short drive into Salisbury and a drink somewhere public.
