The town took shape around an 11th-century Norman castle, was besieged in the Anarchy and again in the Civil War, when the Royalist win at Roundway Down lifted the siege, and by the early 1700s it had the largest corn market in the West Country. Brewing has been part of the place since the 18th century. Getting to a Devizes hookup without a train

The railway left Devizes in 1966 and the station was demolished soon after, so meeting up here means the road. Melksham is six and a half miles away, Chippenham just over nine and Corsham about ten, with Westbury a fraction further and Bath around 16.
