The Romans built baths and a temple around Bath's hot springs in about 60 AD and called the place Aquae Sulis. The Georgians made it a fashionable spa and filled it with buildings in the local Bath stone. The result is a whole city on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1987, and one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe.

It's also a working city of around 100,000 people, the largest in Somerset, lying in the Avon valley eleven miles south-east of Bristol, with the southern edge of the Cotswolds around it and the Mendips seven miles south. Beyond the landmarks, its neighbourhoods run from Twerton and Oldfield Park to Widcombe, Combe Down, Walcot and Lansdown. Georgian Bath did its socialising at the Assembly Rooms. The Royal Crescent or the Circus: Two of the Georgian set pieces, built in Bath stone and easy for a visitor to find as well as a local.
The Abbey: Founded in the 7th century and rebuilt twice since, it's a meeting point nobody walks past by mistake.
Lansdown: The plateau tops out at 238 metres, the highest ground around the city. Save the walk up there for a second date.

Bring a brolly, too: like the rest of the South West, Bath runs wetter and milder than most of the country. Keynsham is about six and a half miles away if you'd rather meet halfway to Bristol, and Corsham and Frome are within about ten.
