Westerham's name is a set of directions. In Old English a hām was a village or homestead, so this is the westerly one.

It sits right where Kent meets both Greater London and Surrey, 3.4 miles east of Oxted and six miles west of Sevenoaks. The place was on record by the 9th century, and the Domesday Book spells it Oistreham, the same form as Ouistreham in Normandy. The River Darent runs through the town and once drove three watermills.
