A small river town with three counties on the doorstep
Edenbridge grew up where a Roman road crossed a river, and it takes its name from the Eden. The road was the London to Lewes Way, built with iron slag from the smelting going on around it, and in the Middle Ages the town became a centre of the Wealden iron industry. Many medieval timber buildings still stand, and one houses the Eden Valley Museum. The Eden has flooded the High Street too, worst of all in 1958, before any defences were built.
Today it is a town of about 8,000 on the Kent and Surrey border, with West Sussex a few miles down the road. Even the television is split between the Tunbridge Wells and Crystal Palace transmitters, so the local news arrives from the South East or from London. That spread is the point. A town this size can't offer much on its own, but here you are choosing between three counties instead of one. Edenbridge reaches further than you'd think
After the Second World War the London County Council built two modernist estates here, Stangrove Park and Spitals Cross, and the capital is still in the picture. London, Greenwich, Poplar, East Ham and Stratford are all in range, along with Bromley, Gravesend and the rest of Kent. Four in ten members are 25 to 34 and a third are under 25, so nearly three in four are under 35, while only about one in eight has reached 45. Women make up roughly a third, edging past the three in ten you'd find site-wide. With so many members in London itself, agree early who is doing the travelling.

Cross a county line for the first drink
It is 5.2 miles to Westerham, in Kent, and 5.7 to East Grinstead, over the line in West Sussex. Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Royal Tunbridge Wells follow at 7.7, 8.9 and 9.4 miles, with Horley in Surrey just under ten. Meeting on someone else's patch also keeps your own street out of it.
