Hookups for adults across Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees and Calderdale.

West Yorkshire hookups without the long drive

Planning a hookup in West Yorkshire? Look at the train map before the road map.

Leeds is the hub. LNER, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express run long-distance services from it, and Northern runs the local lines, several of them named after the valleys they follow: Airedale, Wharfedale and the Calder Valley, plus the Huddersfield, Wakefield and Pontefract lines. Grand Central runs from Bradford to London by way of Halifax. On the road, the M62, the M1 and the A1(M) all cross the county, and Leeds Bradford Airport at Yeadon is the largest in Yorkshire.

About 2.4 million people live here, and the middle of the county is one urban spread, with Leeds to the north-east, Bradford to the north-west, Huddersfield to the south-west and Wakefield to the south-east. Five boroughs, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, work together as one combined authority. Out at the edges it turns rural, and in the west the land climbs into the steep valleys of the South Pennines.

Plenty of under-25s, and more over-55s than you'd think

Just under half of our members in and around West Yorkshire are 18 to 24, and the 25 to 34s make up close on another quarter. The middle years are thinner, with about one in ten aged 35 to 44 and fewer than that aged 45 to 54, yet roughly one in eight is 55 or over, a bigger slice than across the UK site. Around one in five is a woman.

They come from Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Huddersfield, and from Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham and Rochdale as well. Here the county line matters less than the train times.

Gigs, derby days and a wander down Briggate

When you want somewhere public with people about, Leeds has the most to choose from: it is the main shopping draw for the county and the wider region.

  • Briggate
  • The Headrow
  • Trinity Leeds
  • Kirkgate Market
  • The White Rose Centre

Kirkgate Market is the largest indoor market in Europe, so agree which entrance before you set off. For an evening there's the First Direct Arena, which seats around 15,000, as well as the Leeds Playhouse, Opera North and the Grand Theatre, while Bradford has the Alhambra, St George's Hall and the National Science and Media Museum. Rugby league is big here too, and a game between any two of the county's clubs counts as a West Yorkshire derby. Make the first meeting public; our safety page covers the rest.

Getting around West Yorkshire, sorted

Can I get to a hookup in West Yorkshire without a car?

A lot of the time, yes. The local rail network centres on Leeds, with Northern lines up Airedale, Wharfedale and the Calder Valley and others named for Huddersfield, Wakefield and Pontefract. Pick a meeting spot near a station and neither of you has to drive.

Which towns sit closest to the middle of West Yorkshire?

Ossett is about a mile and a half from the county's middle, Dewsbury and Batley are about two miles off, and Wakefield is under four. Leeds is under seven miles away and Bradford under ten, so the four big places are all within easy reach of one another.
