The spa town sits on the south bank of the River Wharfe with the moor to its south, and it has Victorian architecture, wide streets and floral displays. Tourism is a big part of its living: people use Ilkley as a base for the moor and the countryside beyond. Anyone from the town is an Olicanian, a name thought to come from the Roman fort it is built on.

The Victorian parades of the Grove and Brook Street, and the old arcade with its fountain and hanging baskets, are pretty, public and easy to find, which makes them a good place to start a first meeting.

A train or bus ride from Leeds, Bradford or Skipton

Ilkley station is on the Wharfedale Line, with about 35 trains a day to each of Leeds and Bradford, and the bus station next door serves Keighley, Skipton, Otley and Leeds, plus Grassington and Malham. By road, Leeds is 18 miles away and Bradford about 16.
