Walthamstow's High Street runs east to west, and the market takes up most of it: the second longest outdoor market in Europe. A long street of stalls and strangers is about as easy a place as you'll find for a first hello with someone you've only seen in photos.
East of the centre, Walthamstow Village is the oldest part of town, and St Mary's Church, the town's parish church, stands there. The former Walthamstow Stadium, closed since 2008, is on the north side, and a Grade II* listed museum on Forest Road fills what was once a family home, which makes a decent wet-weather second date. The town began as part of Essex and was swallowed by London's growth in the 19th century. It sits 7.5 miles north-east of central London, and about 109,000 people were counted here in 2011.

The market on the High Street is the obvious public place for a first meeting, with stalls and people about and plenty of ways to walk off if the spark isn't there. If it goes well, head east to Walthamstow Village for something slower. Five railway stations serve the town, and Walthamstow Central and Blackhorse Road are both Victoria line interchanges, which makes them easy to name when you're agreeing where to meet.
