Thetford grew fast after the Second World War, when it became an overspill town and took in people from London.
The place is far older than that. People were settled here in the Iron Age, a castle followed soon after the Norman Conquest, and a priory founded in 1104 became the town's largest religious house. The Dissolution of the Monasteries then hit hard and the castle was destroyed, and Thetford was rebuilt in 1574, when it received its charter.
Today it's a Norfolk market town of about 24,000 people, just east of Thetford Forest on the A11. Cars come in on that road. Trains arrive on the Breckland line, and Thetford's station is one of the best-preserved pieces of 19th-century railway architecture in East Anglia, which makes it an easy landmark for a first meeting.
