The abbey came first, though. Built in the twelfth century, it is what the town grew up around, and the site where the Severn and the Avon join made Tewkesbury a trading point worth having. Today it's a market town in the north of Gloucestershire, so near Worcestershire that the Carrant Brook marks much of the border, and through the winter months the rivers can leave it ringed with water.
