The Romans founded Gloucester as a colony in AD 97, by what became the traditional lowest bridging point of the Severn, the longest river in Great Britain. It's still a port: the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal links its docks to the Severn Estuary. The city stands on the east bank of the river, with the Cotswolds rising to the east, the Forest of Dean to the west and the Malvern Hills to the north.

It's the county town of Gloucestershire and a cathedral city of about 132,000 people, or nearer 170,000 counting the wider urban area out to Brockworth and Churchdown. The cathedral, close to the river in the north of the city, is the big landmark, and its cloisters have turned up in more than one film; a good number of medieval and Tudor half-timbered houses survive too. Kingsholm Stadium is home to Gloucester Rugby, founded in 1873 and one of the top clubs in Europe, and the city hosted Rugby World Cup matches in 1991 and 2015. The International Rhythm and Blues Festival runs from the end of July into early August, and every January the Cajun and Zydeco Festival takes over a weekend, the largest of its kind in the UK. Once every three years the city hosts the Three Choirs Festival, one of the oldest music festivals in the British Isles, which it shares with Hereford and Worcester.

Away from the big dates, the Guildhall is the city's main venue, with live music, dance nights, a cinema, a bar and a café under one roof, and the GL1 leisure centre takes the larger concerts. Cheltenham is seven miles up the road

Cheltenham is about seven miles from Gloucester, and Stroud and Stonehouse are both around eight. Tewkesbury is just over nine, Dursley and Ross-on-Wye about fourteen, and Berkeley and Cirencester around fifteen. Monmouth is 19 miles off, the Welsh border 17 and Bristol 33.
