The place itself is small, about 5,000 people on the River Stour in the Dover District, and it was one of the Cinque Ports. Deal is under four and a half miles away and Ramsgate under six, so a first meeting a little out of town is easy to arrange. Margate is about eight miles, Dover just over ten and Canterbury 11.
