It has been a fishing town, a mining town and a garrison town, and its story is bound up with the anchorage in the Downs. Deal joined the Cinque Ports as a "limb port" in 1278 and went on to become the busiest port in England.

Middle Street and the seafront give you somewhere public and easy to find for a first meeting, and Walmer is handy if one of you lives at that end.

Up the road

Sandwich is under four and a half miles away, and Dover and Ramsgate are both under eight, so meeting halfway isn't much of a trek.
