Few places in Britain have as many students for every permanent resident as Canterbury. Add the tourists, a million of whom visit the cathedral each year, and you have a city of about 55,000 that's used to new faces arriving.

It's an old city, too. People have lived here since the Palaeolithic, it was the capital of the Celtic Cantiaci and later of the Jutish kingdom of Kent, and the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a city wall that dates back to Roman times and was rebuilt in the 14th century. The River Stour runs through on its way to the Strait of Dover.

If you're one of those students, or a local who's watched a few intakes come and go, the approach is the same. Put Canterbury down as your nearest town, swipe through who's close, and keep the first meeting somewhere with people about.

Faversham is under nine miles away, Sandwich about 11 and Ashford just under 13, so a match from any of them can meet you in the city or halfway.
