Oxford is the name everyone knows, and the city sits near the middle of the county, famous for its university. Yet Oxfordshire is largely rural: about 763,000 people across 1,006 square miles, with the market town of Banbury in the north, Bicester in the north-east, Witney in the west, and Abingdon and Didcot in the south.
The Thames runs through a low clay vale in the middle, with hills on either side: the Cotswolds in the north-west and the ironstone uplands around Banbury in the far north, the Berkshire Downs and the Chilterns in the south. White Horse Hill, at 261 metres, is the highest point in the county, and the land south of the river, much of it now the Vale of White Horse district, was historically part of Berkshire.
The city is the hub, but it needn't be where you meet: the towns around it work just as well for a first drink, and several sit within a dozen miles of its centre.
Two universities, three hill ranges and the Thames
Oxford is home to two universities, the ancient University of Oxford and the modern Oxford Brookes, and as the county's biggest place it makes the obvious first stop. Out of the city, Abingdon-on-Thames suits a walk by the river, and the county's three ranges of hills, all Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are there for a daytime date that might run into the evening:

- The Berkshire Downs

For a county best known for its university, the crowd is older than you might guess. The 35 to 44s lead among our members in and around Oxfordshire, at a little under three in ten, and the 18 to 24s, at nearly a quarter, come second.
