Marsh once ringed March on every side, and the town stood on an island of its own, the second largest in the Great Level.

Draining the land turned it into a trading town and a minor port, and then a railway centre. It was county town of the Isle of Ely, which stood as a county of its own from 1889 to 1965, and today it has about 21,000 people, the administrative centre of Fenland District Council and the old course of the River Nene, now used mainly by pleasure boats.

The centre mixes independent shops with several bars and restaurants, and a pub opened in the old Hippodrome cinema and bingo hall in 2011. Food processing factories are among the big local employers, March Town United play their football at the GER Sports Ground on Robingoodfellows Lane, and the Fen Tigers, a goalball club for blind and visually impaired players founded in 2016, call March home. In a town of this size it pays to keep things low-key, and members see only a username, never your real name or email.

Chatteris, Wisbech or a change of scene in Peterborough

Short hops first. Chatteris, the nearest town with a page of its own, is under seven miles away and Wisbech about eight and a half. Ely is nearly 13 miles off and Peterborough about 14, both far enough to feel like a proper change of scene.
