Hawick Hookups: Hawick Women Want to Meet
No-strings fun for adults in Hawick and the Teviot valley, with Galashiels and Kelso within reach.
Hookups in Hawick, a long way from the sea
People from Hawick call themselves Teries, after a line in a traditional song ('Teribus ye teri odin'), and they have a Borders Scots accent of their own to go with it. About 13,500 of them live where the Slitrig Water meets the River Teviot, among sandstone buildings with slate roofs, in one of the furthest towns from the sea in Scotland.
Knitting and weaving built the place, tweed first and cashmere after, and luxury knitwear is still made here. Textile production declined in the late 20th century, but Hawick is still a regional centre for shopping, tourism and services. The calendar gives you an excuse to get out, too. The annual Common Riding rides the boundaries of the town's common land and remembers a win by local youths over an English raiding party in 1514, and the Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival comes round every year. Either one is a good reason to say yes to a drink with someone new.
Sixty miles of company around Hawick
The women's share is the surprise. Women make up more than four in ten of the members within 60 miles of Hawick, where the figure for the site as a whole is nearer three in ten. Nearly four in ten are aged 25 to 34, about a fifth each are 18 to 24, 35 to 44 and 45 to 54, and only one in twenty is 55 or over. The circle is wide enough to take in Edinburgh, Newcastle upon Tyne, East Kilbride and Hamilton, so some matches will be a proper drive away.

Meet halfway: Galashiels, Kelso or Peebles
Hawick lost its trains in 1969, when the Waverley Route closed. The Borders Railway reopened part of that line in 2015, but it stops at Tweedbank, near Galashiels, which is 13 miles from Hawick and the easy place to meet if one of you is coming by train. Otherwise it's the road. The A7 runs through Hawick between Edinburgh and Carlisle, other roads lead to Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle, and regular buses connect with the station at Carlisle, 42 miles away.
For a change of scene, Kelso is about 18 miles off and Peebles about 22, both in the Scottish Borders as well. Wherever you choose, meet somewhere public the first time, tell a friend where you're going and sort out your way home before you set off. Our safety page explains blocking and reporting if a chat turns sour.
