Most of Belfast falls inside County Antrim, the rest spilling over into Down, so the capital is the obvious place for a first drink if you live at the southern end. The county as a whole counted about 651,000 people at the last census, more than anywhere else in Northern Ireland, and on the whole island only County Dublin has more.
The county takes in the north-east shore of Lough Neagh and runs up to a north coast of basalt cliffs, where Fair Head and the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, show off their columns. The hills climb towards the east, Trostan the highest of them at 550 metres, with Slemish and Divis among the rest, and the Glens of Antrim are isolated, rugged country. In between sit the towns: Ballymena, Larne, Antrim itself, Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey, plus smaller places such as Crumlin, Randalstown, Greenisland and Jordanstown. The name comes from the town of Antrim, and means a lone ridge.

Portrush nights and Causeway days
Portrush is a popular seaside resort with a nightlife to go with it, which makes it the natural pick for a night out on the coast. For a day together afterwards, there's the Causeway, Fair Head and the Glens, and Bushmills, where the whiskey is made. Inland, Ballymena is the nearest town with a page to the middle of the county, at about ten miles. Measured from the same spot, these towns all have pages of their own too:
