People were already living at Coleraine something like 9,000 years ago. Wooden houses from around 7000 BC turned up at Mount Sandel, in the forest on the east side of town, and the site is claimed as the oldest place of human settlement in Ireland. You're after something a little shorter term.

The town stands at the lowest point where the River Bann can be bridged, about 90 metres wide there, and three bridges cross it today. It's the county town of County Londonderry, home to about 24,500 people at the 2021 census, with the Diamond and the Town Hall at its heart, Belfast 55 miles to the south-east and Derry 30 miles to the west. Its Irish name, Cúil Raithin, means 'nook of the ferns', which is more romantic than a hookup needs to be.

Ulster University has a campus about a mile north of the centre, and the Causeway Coast route, which draws more than two million visitors a year, runs close by. For Coleraine hookups, that adds up to plenty of new faces for a town of 25,000.

Portrush is only about four miles away and part of the same borough, and Ballymoney is seven and a half. Limavady is about 13 miles off, Ballycastle 17 and Ballymena 24. The Giant's Causeway is 25 minutes away by bus, and in summer a narrow-gauge steam train runs out to it from Bushmills, which has its own buses from Coleraine. Is Coleraine easy to get around without a car?

Fairly, yes. Trains run on the Belfast to Derry line and the branch to Portrush, the Ulsterbus depot shares the station, and buses go out to Bushmills, so a good stretch of the coast is reachable without driving. Check the last service home before you set off.

What if I'd rather keep it off my own doorstep?
