Londonderry Hookups: Londonderry Women Want to Meet

A night out, no strings, on either bank of the Foyle.

Londonderry hookups on both banks of the Foyle

The port says Londonderry, the airport says Derry, and the city answers to both. Either way it's Northern Ireland's second-biggest city, with about 85,000 people at the 2021 census, built over steep hills either side of the River Foyle and near the Donegal border.

The old walled city stands on high ground west of the river, with the Cityside around it, while the Waterside spreads along the east bank. Traffic crosses on the Craigavon Bridge or the Foyle Bridge, Ireland's longest, and in the centre the Peace Bridge takes people across on foot. In 2013 the city was the first ever UK City of Culture, and Ulster University's Magee Campus is here as well.

For Londonderry hookups, the river matters more than the name. Whichever bank you live on, the person you click with could just as easily be on the other, and a walk over the Peace Bridge is a better opening move than a taxi.

First meetings, Cityside or Waterside

Cityside

Inside the walls the streets keep their old plan: Shipquay Street, Ferryquay Street, Butcher Street and Bishop Street run out from the Diamond to the city gates, lined with Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Foyleside and the Richmond Centre, the two main shopping centres, are both handy for a daytime meeting, and Foyleside's 1,430 parking spaces leave nobody an excuse for being late.

Waterside

Across the river, Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre and the Crescent Link Retail Park give you public ground of your own. Crescent Link is Northern Ireland's second-biggest retail park, behind only Sprucefield in Lisburn, so there's room to wander while you talk.

Live on opposite banks? Meet in the middle of the Peace Bridge, walk to whichever side has the better plan, and keep the first time somewhere busy. Our safety page covers the basics, from meeting in public to blocking someone who won't take the hint.

When the right match lives out of town

The city's shops serve much of the county, and Tyrone and Donegal as well, while the nearest towns are a drive away. Limavady is under 15 miles off, Coleraine and Omagh are both about 27, and Portrush and Ballymoney are a few miles beyond. The railway runs to Coleraine, and City of Derry Airport is a little over five miles north-east of the centre. Your matches look at miles, not at which name you give the city, so set your nearest town and let distance do the sorting.

Your age group is on here too

We chart the whole UK here rather than one city, so take these as national figures. More than half of our members are under 35, but there's company for older members too: one in five is 35 to 44, about one in seven is 45 to 54 and around 9 per cent are 55 or over. There are roughly three women for every seven men, and about half of those women are 25 to 34.

Questions from both sides of the river

Is Derry the same place as Londonderry?

Yes. It's one city with two names, Londonderry officially and Derry on the airport and the council, and the Cityside, the Waterside and the bridges between them are the same whichever you use.

Where's a good first meeting spot in Londonderry?

Somewhere public in the centre: inside the walls around the Diamond, or one of the shopping centres if you'd rather meet in daylight. If you live on opposite banks, the Peace Bridge makes a natural halfway point.

Will I have to leave Londonderry to meet someone?

Not necessarily. With about 85,000 people it's Northern Ireland's second city, and its shops draw people in from across the county, Tyrone and Donegal. If you're open to a drive, Limavady is under 15 miles away and Coleraine about 27.
