Antrim's Irish name, Aontroim, means "lone ridge", and the town stands on the banks of the Six Mile Water on the north-east shore of Lough Neagh.
It is a historic market town and the county town of County Antrim, with 25,606 people at the 2021 census, about 14 miles north-west of Belfast. For a long time it ran its own borough council. In 2015 that merged with Newtownabbey's to form Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, so the town now shares its administration with a neighbour a short drive away.
