Chepstow is the easternmost settlement in Wales: a walled town on the tidal Wye, two miles above the Severn, right beside the western end of the Severn Bridge. Its castle stands on a clifftop above the river and the old bridge, and it's often named as the oldest surviving stone castle in Britain, begun by the Normans straight after the Conquest.
Passing trade has long been the town's living. The medieval port brought in wine and sent out timber and bark from the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, and by the late 18th century the Wye Tour had made it an early stop for tourists. Tourism still matters here, so a stranger in town is nothing new.
A place that has lived off visitors for centuries is used to people arriving, staying a while and moving on, which suits a no-strings night rather well.

Thornbury and Patchway, over in South Gloucestershire, are seven and eight miles off. Because Chepstow adjoins the border, choosing where to meet can mean choosing a country as well as a town, and Bristol is 18 miles away and Cardiff 28 if you'd like a proper change of scene.
