Meet in Monmouth, the border town with a bridge like no other
Monmouth stands where the Monnow runs into the Wye, two miles from the English border, and its medieval stone gated bridge is the only one of its kind left in Britain.
There was a small Roman fort here, and the Normans built the castle around 1067. The wool trade helped the town grow, and it was making knitted, felted caps from the 15th century onwards. About 10,500 people lived there at the 2011 census, with wooded hills to the north, east and south, among them Buckholt Wood, the Kymin and the Graig.
It makes a handsome frame for a first meeting. A town this size doesn't need a huge dating pool to be a good place to start, only somewhere worth suggesting, and a castle, a one-of-a-kind bridge and a backdrop of wooded hills give you plenty to suggest and plenty to talk about.

If you're driving
The A40 runs past the town to Ross-on-Wye, about nine and a half miles away, where it links with the M50. The A466 Wye Valley Road crosses the A40 at Monmouth and joins Chepstow, 12 miles off, to Hereford, about 17, with the M48 and the Severn Bridge at the Chepstow end.
If you're not
Monmouth has had no passenger trains since January 1959. Buses run to Hereford, Ross-on-Wye, Coleford, Chepstow, Newport and Abergavenny, regular but infrequent, so find out when the last one leaves before you agree where to meet.
