Bridlington has been called the Lobster Capital of Europe, with over 300 tonnes landed at its harbour every year, so nobody here should struggle for an opening line.
This is a town of around 35,000 that grew up in two halves. The historic town has the Priory Church of St Mary and the Bayle gate, both Grade I listed, on the site of a priory founded in 1133. The Quay by the harbour began as a fishing port and turned into a seaside resort in the 19th century after a spring was found there, and a railway station opened between the two in 1846. Even the local stream is shy: the Gypsey Race runs below ground for its last half mile, from the Quay Road car park, before it reaches the sea at the harbour.
That gives a first meeting a choice of backdrops, the harbour end for sea air or the historic town for the priory. Summer tourism is the main trade, so expect more new faces in July than in January.
Younger than the site as a whole, and spread wide
Measured across 60 miles, Bridlington's member picture is a youthful one. The 25 to 34s edge ahead at a little over a third, the 18 to 24s trail them by only a few points, and between them they put about two thirds of members under 35, which is younger than the site overall. Bridlington has been a place people travel to since it became a resort for industrial workers from the West Riding, so going the distance to meet someone is hardly new. Filey is under ten miles away, while Driffield and Hornsea are each about twelve, which makes any of the three a fair halfway point for a match who lives that way.
