Filey is where the long walks stop. The Cleveland Way, which sets off from Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors, ends here, the Yorkshire Wolds Way reaches its northern end here, and the 70-mile Great Yorkshire Bike Ride rolls in from Wetherby Racecourse. The town itself is a former fishing village turned seaside resort, with a large sandy beach on Filey Bay and just under 7,000 people in the parish. South of the town, the old holiday camp has become a 600-home holiday development.

A town of finish lines is a friendly place to start talking. Filey sits between the two, which means you can offer your match a town on either side. Scarborough is under seven miles away and Bridlington about ten, while Driffield is fifteen miles off.

Filey spent most of its history in the East Riding and only became part of North Yorkshire in 1974, so Bridlington and Driffield are old neighbours rather than strangers.
