Cardiff and the Vale: hookups in the old county
South Glamorgan was abolished on 1 April 1996, and yet the name is still in use. It survives as a preserved county, covering two places that have run themselves ever since: Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
It was put together in 1974 from the county borough of Cardiff, the southern part of the old county of Glamorgan and the parish of St Mellons, which came across from Monmouthshire. It had just two districts, Cardiff and the Vale; only the Isle of Wight had as few. Beyond Cardiff, its main towns were Barry, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and Penarth.
That history leaves a simple shape for anyone looking for a hookup: the city of Cardiff and the towns of the Vale, all close together. From the middle of the old county, Dinas Powys is just over four miles away, Penarth and Cardiff about six, and Llantwit Major under eight.

Pentyrch and Creigiau were handed to Cardiff, and Wick, St Brides Major and Ewenny to the Vale, all from Mid Glamorgan, so those villages joined the old county's successors without ever having been part of it.
