Inside its borders are two national parks, the North York Moors to the east and most of the Yorkshire Dales to the west, with a broad plain between them: the Vale of Mowbray in the north and the Vale of York in the south. The built-up parts are Teesside in the north-east, where Middlesbrough and Redcar stand, and the city of York in the south. The rest is country, with towns dotted through it: Harrogate in the south-west, the city of Ripon near the middle and Scarborough on the east coast.
Set your distance with that map in mind. From the centre of the county, Ripon is under two and a half miles away, Thirsk under eight, Bedale about nine, and Northallerton and Harrogate about twelve each. York, Scarborough and Middlesbrough are all further out than that, which is worth knowing before you agree to a midweek drink.
Mostly under 35, from Teesside to Leeds
About two in three of our members in and around North Yorkshire are under 35. Just over a third are 18 to 24 and nearly three in ten are 25 to 34; after that, about one in seven is 35 to 44, around one in ten 45 to 54 and roughly one in eight 55 or over. Just under a quarter are women.
Some live inside the county, in Middlesbrough and in Thornaby on Teesside. Others come from Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Huddersfield, from Hartlepool and even from Burnley, so a wide distance setting earns its keep here.

York, Teesside or the coast for a first meet
- York
- The main campuses of the University of York and York St John University are both here. A city centre with two universities in it is an easy place to meet someone new without standing out.
- Middlesbrough and Thornaby
- Teesside University has its main campus in Middlesbrough, and Durham University's Queen's Campus is in Thornaby-on-Tees. This corner of the county belongs to the Teesside conurbation, so there are people about.
- Scarborough
- A Coventry University campus, CU Scarborough, sits in the town on the east coast. Across the county as a whole, nearly one job in five in 2019 was in accommodation and meals, mostly for tourists.
- Ripon and Harrogate
- Ripon is a city near the centre of the county and Harrogate is about twelve miles from that centre, so either one makes a fair halfway point for people coming in from the Dales or the Vale.

Most of North Yorkshire is rural or super sparse, so don't expect a match in the next village. Set a generous distance instead: our members in and around the county come from Teesside, Leeds and Bradford as well as from its own towns, and a weekend is often enough to bridge the gap.

Yes. York sits in the south of the ceremonial county with its own council, which works with North Yorkshire's through a combined authority. Middlesbrough and Redcar are part of the county in the same way, and each has a page of its own.
