Merthyr Tydfil hookups, where the first steam railway trip set off

In 1804 the world's first steam-powered railway trip set off from the Penydarren ironworks and covered nine miles to the Glamorganshire Canal. Merthyr was known as the Iron Capital of the World in the early 19th century, and by the 1851 census it was the largest town in Wales, in a country that had just become the first to employ more people in industry than on the land.

Merthyr, as the town is usually shortened, has roughly 44,000 people and lies about 23 miles north of Cardiff. The first half of its name is a Welsh word that usually means martyr, though here it is closer to a place of worship built over a martyr's relics. Nine miles made history in 1804, so for a first meeting you can aim a good deal lower. There is plenty of town to meet someone without leaving it, but the people on the site do not stop at the borough boundary, which is why the figures below cover a wider circle.
