Nearly a third of Fermanagh is lakes and waterways. Upper and Lower Lough Erne and the River Erne are among them, forests cover another 14 per cent, and most of the farmland is grass for grazing and hay. About 63,600 people live in the county, and farming and tourism keep it going.

The official statistics count no large towns here and no small ones either, just one medium town, one intermediate settlement, five villages and a great many hamlets.     The island town is the obvious first stop: the county's largest place, and somewhere public to meet for a first drink.

    Next time: the castle, the Castle Coole Estate or a day on the lough.

  • Look over the county line

    Fivemiletown is about nine miles from the middle of the county, Clogher 13 and Augher 16, all in Mid Ulster.

    Further: Omagh is about 20 miles away, Dungannon 32.

  • Give a username, not your name

It can be. The waterways are busy with cabin cruisers, small boats and anglers, so you won't be the only ones out there. Keep the first meeting on dry land and in public, and save the boat for when you know you get on.
