One of the shops on Berkhamsted's high street trades from the oldest known jettied timber-framed building in Britain, put up some time between 1277 and 1297. Even then the town had centuries behind it. It's first mentioned in 970, the Domesday Book counts it as a borough, and its Norman motte-and-bailey castle, a ruin now, stayed in royal hands for four hundred years. In the 13th and 14th centuries the wool trade kept the market busy.

Today this is a market town of a little over 21,000 people, in the Bulbourne Valley 26 miles north-west of London, joined on to the village of Northchurch and ringed by countryside and the Chiltern Hills. In a place that size, faces get familiar. So the people browsing you see a username and Berkhamsted as your nearest town, and nothing that leads to your door: no real name, no email, no address.

1. Widen the map a little. Chesham is 4.4 miles off and Hemel Hempstead, the large new town that Dacorum is run from, about five. Amersham, Wendover and Chorleywood are all within eight.
