Bangor Abbey began as a monastery in the 6th century and grew important and influential, so the place has had a good fourteen centuries to get used to visitors. The title of city is the new part. It arrived in 2022, as part of the Platinum Jubilee, and made Bangor the sixth city in Northern Ireland.
Scottish settlers came in numbers during the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century, and the town grew with them. About 64,600 people live in this seaside city on the south side of Belfast Lough, 13 miles east of Belfast. Tourism matters to the local economy, particularly in the summer months, and the marina is one of the largest in Ireland, with the Royal Ulster and Ballyholme yacht clubs based here too. The A2 and the Belfast to Bangor railway line both run into Belfast, so meeting in the middle doesn't have to mean driving.
