Only Greater London has more people than the West Midlands county: some three million, crammed into just 348 square miles, and almost every corner of it built up. Birmingham sits in the middle, with Solihull and the city of Coventry to the east, West Bromwich and the city of Wolverhampton to the west, and Sutton Coldfield up to the north. Birmingham, Wolverhampton, the Black Country and Solihull form the third most populous conurbation in the UK, around 2.44 million people, so from one town you're straight into the next. Coventry is the odd one out. A stretch of green belt about 13 miles across, the Meriden Gap around Balsall Common, keeps it separate and still feels like countryside, which turns a hookup between Coventry and the rest into a proper trip rather than a hop.

Close to four in ten of our members in and around the West Midlands are aged 18 to 24, and just as many are 25 to 34; past 35 the numbers fall away sharply, with the 35 to 44s, the 45 to 54s and the over-55s each at roughly one in ten. Women make up a little over one in five, below the site-wide share, so it pays men to put real effort into a profile. - Seven of the county's ten universities are in the city, from Aston to Birmingham City and the University of Birmingham, which means a lot of students in one place. The Bullring, the Hippodrome and Symphony Hall at the International Convention Centre all make easy, public starting points.
- Coventry
- Coventry University and the University of Warwick are both here, along with the cathedral, the SkyDome Arena and the Transport Museum.
- Dudley and the Black Country
- Dudley has its castle, its zoo, the Black Country Living Museum and the Merry Hill shopping centre, while the University of Wolverhampton has campuses in Wolverhampton and Walsall.
- Somewhere green
- Sutton Park covers 970 hectares, one of the largest urban parks in Europe, and Barr Beacon and the Sandwell Valley keep a pocket of green belt between Birmingham, Walsall and West Bromwich.

Is Coventry too far from the Black Country for a hookup?
Not too far, but further than one county's map suggests. Coventry lies beyond the Meriden Gap, about 13 miles of green belt, so allow a bit of extra time to get there. If you'd rather keep things close to home, VIP members can narrow a search to one city.
