The River Don is the easiest way to picture South Yorkshire. It rises in the Peak District hills in the far west, then runs east through Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster before the land flattens out into the Humberhead Levels. Barnsley sits up to the north. Those four are the county's four boroughs, with about 1.43 million people between them.
The middle is built up and the edges are rural: Peak moorland to the west, rolling farmland on limestone between Rotherham and Doncaster, and the flat levels out east. The coalfield under Barnsley, Doncaster and part of Sheffield built the industry here, and old pit buildings, spoil heaps and steel plants still dot the scenery. There are three main built-up areas: Sheffield with Rotherham, Doncaster, and the Dearne Valley around Barnsley.
For hooking up, the useful thing is how compact the middle is. Sheffield and Rotherham sit side by side, and Doncaster is about seven miles from the centre of the county.
