Rugby has been a market town since 1255, and the game that carries its name got started here, if you believe the legend that dates it to 1823.
These days it's the second-largest town in Warwickshire, with about 78,000 people at the 2021 census and a borough of around 114,000 around it. It sits near the River Avon on the county's eastern edge, close to the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire borders, which makes it the most easterly town in the West Midlands region. Cross either county line and you're in the East Midlands.
