Rhyl was an elegant Victorian resort before it was anything else, and it still sits where the River Clwyd meets the sea on the north coast of Wales.
It slid in the 1990s and 2000s, and Denbighshire County has put around £15 million into turning that around. The size of the place isn't in doubt, though. At the 2021 census Rhyl itself had 27,325 people, and with Prestatyn and its two outlying villages it forms a built-up area of 45,250, the most populous in North Wales outside the cities. Count Kinmel Bay as well and you reach around 50,000.

Prestatyn is the natural first stop, 3.7 miles east of Rhyl as the crow flies. Colwyn Bay is 9.8 miles away and Ruthin 15.9, so a match in either is a proper outing rather than a stroll. Many of the members above live in Chester, Liverpool or Southport, a drive away, so agree where you'll meet before anyone sets off.
