The Trent crosses Nottinghamshire on a long diagonal, south-west to north-east, through a wide, flat valley. Read the county from that line and finding a hookup here gets a lot simpler.

Nottingham and its suburbs fill the south-west corner, the most crowded part of a county of about 1.19 million people. North of the river the map opens out. Sherwood Forest, what is left of a great ancient woodland, takes up the middle, coal measures lie under the north, and the main towns sit at different points of the compass: Mansfield to the west, Worksop in the north-west and Newark-on-Trent out east.

None of them is far from the middle of the county. Mansfield is under nine miles from it, Worksop and Newark under eleven, East Retford and Kirkby-in-Ashfield about eleven, and Nottingham around sixteen. So if you live out in the county, the city is a trip you can make for the right person, and the right person may be a lot closer than the city.

The University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and a campus of the University of Law between them make Nottingham one of England's largest student cities.
