Northumberland hookups, all the way to the border
England runs out in Northumberland. The county stops at the Scottish border, part of it traced by the Tweed, and it is the least crowded county in England: about 331,000 people across nearly 2,000 square miles.
About a quarter of it is national park, and the west climbs into the Cheviot Hills and the North Pennines, with The Cheviot itself at 815 metres. The largest towns are all in the south-east: Blyth, the county's largest settlement, Cramlington, Ashington, Bedlington and Morpeth, where the council is based. Beyond them the county is rural, with Berwick-upon-Tweed in the far north and Hexham in the south-west, near the spot where the North Tyne and South Tyne meet.
Even the closest of those towns is a fair way from the middle of the county. Morpeth is about 13 and a half miles from it, and Ponteland and West Bedlington about 17. In a county this empty, a hookup is something you plan, not something you stumble into.
A walk on the coast or a night on the Tyne
The Northumberland Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and although the county is one of the coldest parts of England, its place on the east side keeps the rainfall low, with the wettest weather up on the high ground in the west. Wrap up, and a walk by the sea makes an easy first meeting: public, relaxed, and over whenever you want it to be.
For a bigger night, Newcastle upon Tyne is just under 25 miles from the middle of the county. And if the chat needs a starter, Northumberland has traditions found nowhere else in England: the rapper sword dance, clog dancing, the Northumbrian smallpipe and a tartan of its own, which some in Scotland call the Shepherd's Tartan.
