Yarmouth, as it's often called, has been a seaside resort since 1760, and it is a gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the North Sea. The railway arrived in 1844 and made the trip cheaper, Wellington Pier opened ten years later, and Britannia Pier followed in 1858. Through the twentieth century the resort boomed, with a promenade, trams, theatres, pubs, fish-and-chip shops and a Pleasure Beach.
Its fishing industry, mostly herring, shrank after the middle of the last century and has all but ended. North Sea oil in the 1960s brought work servicing offshore gas rigs, and wind power has followed more recently. About 29,000 people live in the built-up area astride the River Yare.
