Until 1921 Dagenham was mostly fields and marsh, a rural parish that ran from Hainault Forest down to the Thames. Then the London County Council began the Becontree estate, people moved in, and by 1938 the place was a borough in its own right. It joined Greater London in 1965 and now sits about eleven and a half miles east of Charing Cross.
The Ford car plant is what the name is known for, and the riverside land around it is being rebuilt. Beam Park is going up on the old Ford site, and the former May and Baker works at Dagenham East has become a base for film and television production. Two miles to Romford, seven to Dartford
Romford is under two miles from Dagenham, which in London terms is practically next door, so a drink there is an easy ask. Dartford is a little over seven, but it's in Kent, across the Thames, so sort out the route before you settle on a time.
